Removing a background is often presented as a single click. The click is simple; deciding whether the downloaded result is good enough still requires a careful look. This guide explains how to use Purgebg and how to inspect the areas where any automatic cutout can struggle.
Start with an image you are allowed to use
Choose a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image under 30 MB. A subject with reasonable contrast against the old background will usually be easier to separate than a subject wearing the same colors as a busy scene.
Purgebg processes the image in your browser. Your browser downloads the background-removal model, but it does not send the selected image to a Purgebg image-processing server. The first run can therefore take longer while the model files download.
Use Fast first
Fast is the default because it uses a smaller, quantized model. For ordinary portraits and clear products, it is the sensible first attempt. Wait until the progress indicator reports that the result is ready, then move the comparison slider across the subject.
Look closely at:
- hair, fur, and soft fabric;
- fingers, earrings, handles, and cables;
- gaps between a person's arms and body;
- pale objects against a pale wall;
- reflections and semi-transparent materials.
The preview is useful, but the exported file is the result that matters. Inspect it at its intended display size and over more than one background color.
Switch to Fine when the edge needs another pass
Fine uses the full-precision version of the local model. It is a larger download and may take longer on older devices. It can reduce artifacts introduced by the smaller quantized model, particularly around portrait edges, but it is not a guarantee of perfection.
If Fast already produces a clean edge, there is no need to wait for Fine. If both modes misunderstand the same part of a difficult image, use a source photo with clearer separation or finish the mask in an editor with manual erase and restore tools.
Choose transparency or a solid color
Keep transparency when you want to place the subject into another design. PNG preserves the transparent alpha channel. Choose white, blue, red, green, gray, or a custom solid shade when you want a finished background immediately.
JPG cannot store transparency. When you download JPG while transparency is selected, Purgebg fills the background with white. For product listings and identity photos, confirm the destination's exact color, dimensions, crop, and file-format requirements rather than relying on a color that only looks correct on your screen.
Keep the original
Automatic processing should never replace your only copy. Keep the source image and save the accepted cutout as a new file. A clear file name can record the purpose, background, and date—for example, product-blue-background-2026-09.png.
